As parents, we’re always looking for ways to build our children’s confidence and help them grow into secure, emotionally resilient little humans. One surprisingly powerful (and beautiful) tool in this journey? Displaying portraits of your children around your home.
It may seem simple, but research and experience alike show that seeing themselves represented visually in their home environment can help children feel valued, important, and loved; critical foundations for healthy self-esteem.
What the Research Says
A pivotal study published in Psychology in the Schools (Wells, 1975) found that children who had greater access to visual representations of themselves, such as schoolwork, photos, and personal items, demonstrated higher levels of self-concept and confidence. These visual affirmations help children solidify a sense of identity and belonging within the family structure.
In the study, the researcher observed how positive self-perception was linked to children being acknowledged and represented in their environment, especially through photographs. These images act as daily reminders that they are seen, celebrated, and loved.
What I’ve Seen Firsthand
As a portrait photographer, and a mum, I see this phenomenon come to life regularly.
In my own home, our walls and tabletops are lined with photos of our friends and family, especially of our two children (currently 1 and 3 years old). From the moment they began crawling, they were drawn to these images. Now, they delight in pointing to photos, naming the people in them, and reaching out with tiny fingers to touch their own smiling faces.
And it doesn’t stop at home. During viewing appointments at Memories by Menzies Photography, I often see children light up when they spot a photo of themselves on screen. I’ll hear the joyful exclamation: “That’s me!”, a simple phrase that holds so much weight. It’s the sound of a child recognising their worth, their place in the world, and the love that surrounds them.
Why Portraits Matter Beyond the Camera
Displaying family and individual portraits offers more than just beautiful home decor, it contributes to a child’s emotional development in the following ways:
-
Affirms their identity: Children feel validated when they see themselves reflected in their environment.
-
Fosters belonging: It shows them they are an essential part of their family narrative.
-
Builds self-worth: Being “seen” helps children develop confidence and pride in who they are.
